Role: Assistant Legal Counsel

FutureLearn is looking for an Assistant Legal Counsel to work together with the Contracts Manager and Legal Counsel as part of a constantly evolving legal team within a growing business. Reporting to the Legal Counsel, the Assistant Legal Counsel will assist in providing support on a broad range of legal matters. This is a great opportunity for a newly qualified solicitor looking for a dynamic in-house commercial role and who is already located in London or wishing to relocate.

Specifically, the Assistant Legal Counsel will:

  • Be expected to be familiar with, and be able to respond to queries and comments on FutureLearn standard contractual terms and conditions, including conducting high level first line reviews and negotiating/providing initial responses in relation to a range of FutureLearn contracts.
  • Use precedents to generate standard contracts, side letters or similar legal documents and amend with deal specific terms.
  • Free draft short ancillary documentation where necessary.
  • Review and evaluate inbound contracts and highlight concerns or make recommendations to the Legal Counsel for their revision and/or acceptance.
  • Assist the Legal Counsel with reviewing and negotiating a range of legal documentation.
  • Work with the wider Legal Team and Business to establish and maintain good contract management processes.
  • The candidate will also assist with any ad hoc legal and administrative duties when required.
  • Assist the business with GDPR readiness and compliance.
  • Assist with general compliance matters.


  • Strong academics - undergraduate with 2:1 or above required.
  • Must be a qualified Solicitor preferable in UK but will consider other common law jurisdictions (NQ - 1 year PQE).
  • Good contract drafting skills and technical ability.
  • Must have experience working on technology and commercial contracts, preferably with an international company.
  • Corporate, IP, litigation, and employment law experience is a plus.
  • Strong ability to balance and prioritize a large workload in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Excellent working knowledge of contract law and concepts, and policies and procedures related to contract management, as well as knowledge of project management principles.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills are required to develop creative solutions to complex business relationships.
  • An interest in the transformation of online learning delivery and higher and further education institutions.
  • Additional language abilities and a strong intercultural skills desirable.

To be successful in this role you must have experience of drafting, negotiating and implementing successful commercial contracts; the ability to give practical commercial advice to the business on contracts and related issues; strong, confident communication skills; and experience of operating to tight deadlines.


  • £44,000 gross per annum salary
